  Whilst the deli downstairs is excellent, the cafe above is scruffy, furnished with chairs and tables that are well past their best. We sat next to an open window which looked out onto some electrical machinery that was covered in muck and dust, some of which was blowing in. On the way out I looked into the kitchens. What I saw confirmed to me that this was my last visit.

  We café upstairs is a great little lunch spot. Arrive early or book as it gets busy. Lots of sandwiches, light snacks and daily specials. Bottled local ales and ciders are well represented.
  Do try the homemade pies with mushy peas.
  Do expect a wait when it's busy

  There is a delicatessen located on the ground floor. It isn’t huge but it is first-class. There is an excellent choice of pies, sausage rolls and cakes available. The Lemon Drizzle Cake is tangy and tasty but my favourite is the ginger parkin. You get a big slab and it is so moist and flavoursome. It is very gingery and full of black treacle/golden syrup and brown sugar. It tastes just like my mother used to make in the early 1950's. You can eat and drink on the street outside, where tables are provided but there are not many and they are usually occupied. Alternatively, you go to the café upstairs, where there is a good range of food and drink on offer. The coffee is good quality and small bottles of rather refreshing prosecco are available. I can recommend the coffee and walnut cake albeit a tad sweet. We were made very welcome by the friendly staff and not rushed. A pleasant experience and well worth a visit.
